What is the "Original" DB manga, and what characterizes it?
When we talk about the "original" manga, we refer to the one drawn and written by Akira Toriyama between 1984 and 1995, first published in Shonen Jump magazine in Japan. Over the years, it has had multiple reissues in various countries, including Spain, whose editions we will review here.
This excludes all manga not drawn by Toriyama and those published after the end of this first work. Therefore, it does not include anything from Jaco (more information in "Other Works") or Dragon Ball Super, which, although the script is by Toriyama, is illustrated by Toyotaro.
The editions of the original Dragon Ball manga in Spain.
If you are going to collect Dragon Ball in Spain, you should know that there are 5 different editions and 7 formats to obtain the complete collection. Here’s a brief summary:
- White/Red Series Edition: Published between 1992 and 1998, it had two formats: tankobon or magazine, with western reading orientation. This edition is no longer in print, with a total of 211 issues for the magazine format and 42 volumes for the tankobon format.
- Yellow/Blue Series Edition: Released between 1997 and 2001, this edition is almost identical but improves the quality and color of the covers. It is also available in two formats: tankobon or magazine, with western reading orientation. This edition is also out of print, with 211 issues for the magazine format and 42 volumes for the tankobon format.
- Ultimate Edition: Launched in 2006, it is only published in kanzenban format, with eastern reading orientation and covers redrawn by Toriyama. It also includes some color pages similar to the original Japanese edition. This edition has 34 volumes.
- Color Edition: Available since 2014, this edition is also in tankobon format, fully colored based on the colors chosen by Toriyama, and divided into 6 story arcs and 32 volumes.
- Legend Edition: Published between 2024 and 2025, this edition is in magazine format, with some color pages. It is a special edition that mimics the original format with which it was released in Shonen Jump in Japan and is a limited product, consisting of 18 issues divided into 3 packs.
